What to ask your potential website designer
Owning a business involves many hard decisions and choices. One of the hardest (for me at least) is knowing with whom, when, and how much to invest.
A website is one of those investments that involve many things to consider, and the whole decision can get overwhelming, fast. In your research you may get pricing that varies so widely from different website designers, it’s near impossible for you to gauge their work or even compare among them.
As a sort of “public service announcement” to a fellow entrepreneur, I have a few guidelines to share that I hope will help you as you make your decision on who will design your website. Asking these questions will help you determine the best designer for your personality, available time, and energy.
A few questions to ask a potential website designer
What is the timeline from project start to website launch? It can take up to a year with some designers based on their client load and focus.
How many rounds of changes do you get on the copy and design? Some designers limit that to one or two rounds.
If copywriting is included, how many words per page and is it search engine optimized? This is a huge consideration. You’ll want a minimum of 500-750 words, based on a strong keyword strategy.
Are images optimized? Who pays for the license?
Are hosting and email fees paid?
How responsive is the designer to your emails and requests? Do they keep in touch with weekly status updates throughout the process?
If you have to coordinate an SEO expert, copywriter, and designer yourself separately, what is your time worth?
Getting those questions answered will help you made a sound decision. (I’m sure you’ve guessed that I take care of all of the above in the best interest of my clients).
Checklist of everything to consider
I’ve compiled a master checklist of everything to consider when making a decision about website design.
Making back your investment
The most important aspect of a website is how hard it can work for you. You want a website that will make back the investment by bringing in leads, clients, and sales. An inexpensive website may not have what it takes to attract the attention of the search engines and potential clients.
You want a website that is bringing in leads and working hard for you, even when you are doing other things.
Alchemy websites usually lead to a quicker timeline on making the investment back due to the solid SEO foundation built into them, and the energy that goes into the design, copy, and entire process.
