Supercharge your website with a strong H1 tag

SEO

Arguably The Most Important SEO element of each page of your website is the content of its H1 tag. In the very least it’s tied for first place with the page title in importance.

The H1 tag is part of the HTML code of your website. Search engines use this bit of code to determine what the primary point of the page is.

Many websites are designed without using H1 tags on each page. Website designers don’t know SEO by default, so unless the person who built your website took SEO into consideration, your website may not be using the H1 tag.

Does each page of your website make use of the H1 tag?

Find out here using this free SEO tool:

https://www.seoreviewtools.com/html-headings-checker/

Plug in your website’s homepage URL in the field indicated. The tool will tell you if your homepage contains an H1 tag and what it is.

Ideally, your homepage:

  1. Has an H1 tag

  2. Has an H1 tag that contains a popular keyword (a word or phrase that describes what you do) that indicates the main point of your website.

Examples of unhelpful H1 tags:

  • Welcome

  • You’re in the Right Place

Examples of valuable and good H1 tags:

  • Website Designer for Entrepreneurs

  • High Intensity Fitness Instructor for Busy Moms

Search engines like Google are looking at the H1 tag to determine what the page is about and what questions it answers. By adding a phrase or word that describes your business best, you increase the chance that your website will be served up on search engine results more frequently when someone is searching for info on that topic.

People are seeing the H1 tag and making a very fast decision about whether they are in the right place or not to get their question answered.

How to add or change your H1 tag

You (or your website designer) can add or update your homepage’s H1 tag thusly:

  1. Open your website’s admin dashboard

  2. Open your homepage

  3. Highlight the heading at the top of the page (or add one) and select H1 from the text format dropdown menu.

That’s all there is to it! Just make sure the new H1 tag contains the main keyword for what you do.
